Everything is Now, 2018
177 x 52 x 40 cm
Bronze edition of 8 + AP
Everything is Now is the first of four life-size figures that I am sculpting in the interface between academic and contemporary art. Each figure is modelled over a period of three-six months. This mediated process is vital for the intimate and collaborative exchange it fosters; the full content of each work is grounded in my relationship with the model, made universal in clay, and given permanence in bronze. My aspiration for this body of work is to create an empowering iconography of real moments in topical sculptures.
I am currently modelling in clay the second figures in this series. My sculpture draws on compositional devices by Auguste Rodin (Meditation, c. 1885) and and Pietro Canonica (Pudore, c.1920). However, it seeks to update the mood from passive (Rodin) and somewhat defensive (Canonica) to present a woman with greater agency. I hope to highlight complexity in historical representation by sculpting a 21st century “liberté” through these subtle subversions of visual references within a classically inspired composition.
